Keepers of The Gate

progress report

Filed under: greudorf — Matthew @ 5:34 pm

still working, just not an hour a week, this week however I’ve managed to get an hour in.

  • got some tiles updated
  • updated door opening/closing
  • altered the map load after a saved game as verge seems to have changed how it saves map names to now include the file path
  • fleshed out the town map a bit more
  • map code

I’m almost back into the well again, decided to change some more with the town map to make it more user controlled instead of just rushing you around with playerMove(). I think it’s a better deal, I actually like how the original zelda just dumped you onto a screen with no direction (but that’s a bit much nowadays).

end of the month

Filed under: greudorf — Matthew @ 1:35 pm

started coding up the well map, that’s it really. Boring to tell you but more fun to see. After I get this map up and running I’ll probably release a demo again to replace the old one. I may make it dump you into a “testing ground” so you can all play with all the items the game currently has as well.

moving along slowly

got a cold

Filed under: greudorf — Matthew @ 5:44 pm

just one hours work in again, just more of the well map. Got an very bad cold/ sinus infection this last week so I didn’t do much of anything, yet alone extra stuff like greudorf. Hopefully I’ll finally feel betting some time this week and be able to start coding this map up and finishing it’s first portion so I can get to actual new content that I haven’t worked on before I decided to shorten the game and change things around so that perhaps I actually finish.

mapping away

Filed under: greudorf — Matthew @ 3:09 pm

corrected an entire building I built on incorrect layers, it was truly a pain in the ass. I’ve done this one several times and it’s one of the reasons I really dislike some of the short comings of mapEd.

filled in some more buildings and got all the obstructions laid in. Made a few more tiles that I needed due to my switch to make buildings have the roofs fade off rather than switching into an interior map section. I’m liking this model better, less tile work and it looks neat. Only downside is that building cannot simply have more than one floor going up, going down still uses map switches.

Next up is scripting up the new introduction, It’ll basically be exactly the same but on the new map. Then comes redesigning the well level, this level is actually one of the latter areas as well and the previous map didn’t really take that into much account.

It’s been a long time…

Believe it or not I”m not dead.

Someone finally made a version of maped that’ll work on Windows 7 so I’m back in action with map making. I also finally got highspeed internet so I can actually download and upload things again. On that note, dial-up is really a dead technology now, you can barely do anything with it anymore.

Barm Escape is probably a game I’ll never finish, it’s original intent was just to have something quickly completed to give me clarity on where to take Keepers. I may resurrect it as a different game and use it to learn lua. (Actually that is the plan, better graphics, animations, and cleaner code.)

Keepers maps are honestly not a huge amount further than over a year ago but I’ve gotten a few hours work in on the main town thus far, a big part of me wants to unify more of the artwork  from different parts of my life and divergent styles but I know better at the moment because then I’ll want to redo it all. So for now I’ll stick with what I have and just try to get the town and first dungeon done.

things are hectic

Filed under: greudorf — Matthew @ 12:32 pm

working on KoTG story line, scrapping it down is somewhat painful but necessary. I imagine by today I’ll have it cut about in half… haven’t started taking apart the maps yet.

Life is getting hectic, must less down time and my wife is due with our next baby in 5 weeks, every saturday I am working on building houses (soon to be working on my own), Sundays laundry at my dads, Mondays I have homeowners classes for the next 5 weeks, Tuesdays I visit family, so don’t expect much in the way of updates for a while afterwards.
